Architecture 2030

With the understanding that there are no individual parts in the universe, all being parts of a whole, architects must move toward a more respectful approach to sustaining the world around us. Architects have the responsibility to address their individual work, one building at a time, whether in a new construction or a preservation project. Taking care of the universe in the architectural realm embraces the idea of sustainability as an agent of change or transformation. Every project needs to be evaluated in terms of sustainability, specific to a particular place. With the vision and leadership of Ed Mazria, AIA 2030, the application of sustainability practices in architecture have become a major issue in the industry. The concern for the carbon footprint of the collection of resources used in the construction is closely considered. The decision to significantly reduce the carbon footprint immediately by 50% for any building built today communicates the serious agreement that architects have committed to, with incremental decreases over measured periods of time for the next 20 years. To implement the environmental concerns into the practice of architecture for the future, the 2030 challenge has been adopted by AIA, named AIA 2030. A website has been established as a design resource, www.sustainability 2030.com. An innovative approach to incorporating our natural resources into the design of built environments has led to formal building codes and organizations in the industry. The duty is to replace natural resources used within a given project. The appreciation of beauty in the world is the driving force in the environmental energy and environmental design philosophy.
