Church of the Light (1989) - Tadao Ando
This church is my favorite piece of architecture for its simplicity and power of design. I had the great privilege to attend a lecture given by Tadao Ando (through an interpreter) at The Art Institute of Chicago several years ago. His main message in the lecture was this: anything is possible in this life if we are willing to work hard enough for it. I realized that this was a personal statement in that Tadao Ando is a self taught architect, his family was financially unable to send him to university for studies.
I was delighted by the story of his dog, Le Corbusier, who sometimes makes the final decision on which projects to take on in the office if Ando is unsure. If Le Corbusier likes the person in question, then it must be a good client. And there you go.
