Building Selection + Justification
For our precedent analysis project I have chosen the Church of the Light by Japanese architect, Tadao Ando. This church is my favorite piece of architecture for its power of design and simplicity. I became aware of Tadao Ando when I was living in Chicago over the last decade and serendipitously moved one block from his first residential house in the US. I felt so intrigued by the house that I would intentionally walk down the section of street where it is located to experience and study it on a regular basis. I also had the great privilege to attend a lecture by Tadao Ando (through an interpreter) at The Art Institute of Chicago several years ago. I learned from the lecture that before he became a self taught architect, he trained as a boxer and learned the power of the punch. He incorporates this strategy of engagement by surprise in his architecture. In my precedent analysis I would like to continue my quest of knowledge in studying Tadao Ando's work and impact on design history. The Church of the Light represents a climax in which his design philosophies are highlighted and express his essential belief that a dwelling is not something separate but is linked to the sacred. His work is influential within the design world globally in that it harnesses geometry, centers people and creates perfect circumstances for people to live in the world. I am fascinated to learn in depth about the traditional cultural references, historical influences, and design details of this piece of influential architecture.
