A Touch of Tetris - Jenga 4.0

Design Process of Caravaggio

SQUEEZE meets BUBBLE meets LEVITATE

Dajana Nedic + Blakeni Walls + Sharon Frazier

A Touch Of Tetris

In Jenga 4.0 we translated our original concept multiplied vertically in space. The opportunity to reposition the upper units at 90 or 180 degrees presented further possibilities to create moments of intrigue, illusion, and mystery. The overall concept mapped onto the Jenga 3.0 program added the provision for more residential space, fire exits, and an elevator. The addition of these elements enhances the community in accessibility and visual interest. Following our original sense of materiality we chose to encase the fire exits and elevator in glass to accentuate the notion of floatation. The positioning of intersecting planes creates a landscape as explored through compression and release in our original concept. The addition of platforms between the upper floors furthers the gesture of compression and release or squeeze. The floating staircases and elevator open onto expanded platforms that also provide opportunities for joining as a community. The residential community reads as a beautifully orchestrated, cohesive whole filled with illusion, mystery, and conceptual interpretation projected onto the landscape.

Precedents

The precedent images communicate a sensibility of lightness, mystery, and intrigue that inspired the vision of our project. Floating elements as realized in the architectural planes, stairs, and elements serve as inspiration for embodying the concepts of levitate, bubble and squeeze.
